The myth about not wearing white after Labor Day:
Labor Day is considered the last day to wear white by most of society... This rule came about partially from The Snobby elite that came up with social rules to try and separate the
OLD MONEY (those born into wealthy families that have had wealth for several generations) and from
New Money or rather Young Money IE those that just became rich recently.
After the Civil war many new millionaires popped up and the women of high society who were already “in” felt it necessary to create a bunch of fashion rules that everyone in the know had to follow. That way they could tell who was proper high society and who was
"Dirty new money"and should be avoided and shunned. Of course later in the 1950's many of these rules began to trickle down into the lower classes through various means.
There were a few people and even socialites that flaunted their own style and personality in total defiance of "Society's Rules" like the ever fabulous and famous COCO Chanel who wore white year round whenever she felt like it.
High society deemed white only for weddings and summer resort wear. Labor Day became a federal holiday in 1894, and
society soon adopted Labor Day as the natural endpoint for summer fashion. The rule became you
start wearing white on Memorial Day and stop wearing white on Labor Day. These days the fashion world is much more laxed about what colors to wear in what seasons but you will still hear the occasional person say
"wearing white after Labor Day is unacceptable" all thanks to some snobby millionaires over 100 years ago. Though if you really think about it the weather can get messy after summer so it's still good advice unless you see a gorgeous day and want to flaunt your own high society status as now it's more of a status to do your own thing anyway despite society's "Rules"
